The elements of art are the basic components an artist uses to create artwork.

Color has three properties: Hue (or name of color) Intensity (how bright/dull it is) Value (how light/dark it is) Color can be defined as warm or cool (see color wheel) Color

Shape is an enclosed space, defined by other elements of art, such as line, value, color, etc.
Shape is 2-dimensional; it has length and width. (3-dimensional objects are considered forms, not shapes.) Can be organic or geometric (ex: triangle, square, etc.) Shape

Value refers to the luminosity of a color – the lightness or darkness of a color.
Shading or rendering is the technique of giving value to an object in an artwork. Value

Texture Texture is the surface quality or “feel” of an object
Ex: smooth, rough, scratchy, soft, etc. Textures can be implied (isn’t actually rough, but looks like it) or actual Texture

Form is an enclosed space, that has three dimensions: length, width, and depth.
Form means the object has volume Ex: a cube, a cone, a sphere Form

Space is the area, distance, etc. around other elements in an artwork
Space can be positive or negative, closed or open, 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional Space
