Mutually Exclusive Events
4
Mutually Exclusive Events
Events that cannot occur at the same time are called mutually exclusive events. Ex: Drawing a heart or a diamond.
5
Compound Events P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B)
Only applies when you have tow events that can occur at the same time.
6
Mutually Exclusive Events
You have a 10-sided die. The die is rolled. Find the probability of the following events. P(4 or 8) P(at least 4)
7
Not Mutually Exclusive Events
Ex: Draw a 2 or a diamond from a standard deck of cards—since it is possible to draw a card that is both a 2 and a diamond, these events are not mutually exclusive.
9
Example #4 You have a 10-sided die. The die is rolled. Find the probability of the following: P(5 or an odd number) B) P(odd or prime number)
10
Practice Using a standard deck of cards, find the probability of:
P(jack or a king) P(jack or a spade)
11
Practice Of 240 girls, 176 are on the Honor Roll, 48 play sports, and 36 are on the Honor Roll and play sports. What is the probability that a randomly selected student plays sports or is on the Honor Roll?
