1 Explanatory/Informative Writing
Educating your reader on a topic

2 Thesis Sentence Thesis statement- short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence.

3 Location of a Thesis Sentence – Always paragraph one, last sentence
Paragraph one – Introduction paragraph Sentence 1 – The hook (catch their attention) Sentence 2 – Detail sentence Sentence 3 – Detail sentence Sentence 4 – Detail sentence Sentence 5 – Thesis sentence

4 Thesis Sentence must include topic items for body 1, 2, & 3

5 Details The words used to describe a person, support an argument, persuade an audience, explain a process, or in some way support the central idea.

6 Body Paragraph The paragraphs between the introduction and conclusion that develop the main idea(s) of the writing. You will need three body paragraphs.

7 Paragraph 2, 3, 4 – Body paragraph

8 Introduction Paragraph
It introduces the main idea of your essay. A good opening paragraph captures the interest of your reader and tells why your topic is important.

9 Transition Words Words or phrases that help clarify the relationships between ideas and tie them together, for example, nevertheless, moreover, most important, as a result.

11 Conclusion the last paragraph in an academic essay and generally summarizes the essay, presents the main idea of the essay

12 Point of view The position or angle from which a story is told, for example, first-person ("I"), third- person ("he").

13 Vivid Details Details which appeal to the senses and help the reader see, feel, smell, taste, and hear the subject.
