1 Advice for Unit 7, P2 Part 2 and 3
Describe what is meant by a positive concept of health Describe what is meant by a negative concept of health Describe what is meant by a holistic concept of health Health is defined in the World Health Organization's Constitution as: “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” ( Do you think this is a positive, negative or holistic concept of health? Explain

2 Positive Concept of Health
Describe what it is (eg about well being – see PointPoint presentation) Question: Does feeling good and having a sense of well being necessarily mean you’re healthy? Can you think of examples where you might feel very good, but actually you might have a disease that you don’t know about. Give examples. Is that person healthy?

3 Negative Concept of Health
Describe what it is (see PowerPoint presentation). Question: Can you think of examples where you might not have a disease, but you’re not actually healthy? Think about diabetes – someone might take insulin every day and control their diabetes with a healthy diet. The negative concept of health says they are unhealthy because they have a disease. What do you think? Are they unhealthy? Explain Think about HIV. Someone has ALL the right medication and lives a long life and rarely gets ill. Are they unhealthy? What would the negative concept of health say? Think about people who might have a very unhealthy diets and engage in negative health behaviours such as binge drinking. They don’t have a specific disease, but would you say they are healthy?

4 Holistic Concept of health
Explain what is meant by a holistic concept of health. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of treating someone in a holistic way eg: Think about the time and money implications Think about underlying causes. Give examples

5 Your definition of health
Write your definition of health, and then analyse whether you think it’s positive or negative and say why. Then say whether it’s holistic (completely holistic or only in part). If you have (for example) 3 of the concepts in, but are missing spiritual and environmental, then explain that it’s largely holistic as it covers some concepts, but that it misses out other concepts.

6 Part 3 Write the WHO’s definition of health.
Say whether it is a positive or negative concept of health and why. Say whether it is holistic and why.
