B) Motivation Based on drives to seek a goal, balanced with down, or rest periods (homeostasis). Examples – food, water, friendship Demo – wrist pull Drives: a) Hunger – blood sugar, taste, glucose monitors – hunger “signals”; Problems: stress, heredity b) Thirst – balance is learned Equilibrium is needed. Temperature receptors, dryness of tongue.

Mental Stimulation - Intellectual Growth, reading a book, “bored” Manipulation Paper Clips, Pencils, XBOX Controller, others? Contact Comfort – soft blankey, ? Why? Affiliation – a sense of belonging

3) Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Self-Actualization = goals + purpose Self-Esteem = self-importance, useful Belonging = friends, identity, kinship, social circle Safety = house, savings, income Physiological = food, water, love? ** Useful in determining problems people may have… caused in part potentially by a failure at a previous level of the hierarchy. Ex. School Dropout – due to low self-worth, caused by verbally abusive parent… “Step A not reached due to issues in B and C” P140 – name groups “stuck” on different levels!

C) Emotion A bodily state causing feelings –above
Vary in many ways once the “Basic” emotions (Anger, interest, disgust, distress, sad, fear, joy, shame, surprise ) are established. Activity: CHARADES – Standard Emotions Personal and cultural factors may affect these to some extent. (Japan) Role of Pessimism/Optimism Page 148 – ten words Opponent Process – intense emotions can often lead to/trigger the opposite emotion. Ex. Summer vacation to start after finals….”Yes!!” Ex. Return ride from trip
