Reading Independent Reading – Daily – Reading Logs
2nd to 3rd grade – a shift from fluency and story elements to critical thinking and higher level reading comprehension skills. Writing about reading is more heavily emphasized. Whole Group students will… Use the theme reader to learn specific reading skills (fact/opinion, cause/effect, main idea, etc.) Use the theme reader to learn specific reading strategies (predicting, inferring, connecting, visualizing, etc.) Small Guided Reading Groups - Children with similar reading abilities will work with books at their instructional level. The focus will be on applying skills and strategies learned during the whole group portion of the lesson. Although in different groups, all children will read stories that relate to a common theme (Heroes, Science at Play, etc.) and practice the same skills and strategies. Independent Reading – Daily – Reading Logs

Writing It’s all about the topic! Talk, talk, talk at home
2nd to 3rd grade –Third grade writing becomes more accurate, more organized, more detailed, more stylistic (main ideas, supporting details, paragraph structure, alliteration, strong verbs, voice) It’s all about the topic! Talk, talk, talk at home Point out interesting language Modes/Types: Personal Narrative, Letter, Opinion, Informational, How-To Cursive Handwriting

Spelling/Grammar Spelling as part of the Writing Process -Zaner Bloser spelling book -Goal: recognize misspelled words and use a spelling resource to make corrections Grammar -Grammar instruction is integrated during writing (specific verbs “sprinted” vs. “went”/proper nouns “Genuardis vs. store.”) -Grammar mini units

2nd-3rd Grade – Greater emphasis on higher level problem solving skills and explaining mathematical thinking through writing. Homework When? Homework Books Most Mon. - Thurs. Evenings
Time spent will vary from child to child Forgotten homework? Homework Folder used to carry all papers, notes, etc. to and from school Please review the folder and help your child to keep it empty Homework Books For students to record assignments Communication tool between home and school Please check and sign homework books. Encourage copying assignments neatly and accurately.
