9 A paragraph is like a puzzle.
Topic sentences, detail sentences, and clincher sentences are parts of a paragraph, and they fit together like a puzzles. Look at Cue Card #5.

10 Think of your work on Topic Sentences as the first piece in a puzzle you are putting together.
When you master Topic Sentences, you will have control over this puzzle piece. It’s the first piece that you need to build your paragraph-writing skills. As you master other parts of the paragraph, you will gain control over other pieces, and you will eventually be able to put the puzzle together with the use of Paragraph Writing Strategy.

11 Let’s begin building the puzzle by defining Topic Sentence.
The Topic Sentence is usually the first sentence in the paragraph. The Topic Sentence tells the reader about the main idea of the paragraph. The Topic Sentence sometimes introduces the main points or details that will be covered in the middle of the paragraph.

12 Cue Card 6 Topic Sentence Is usually the first sentence.
Introduces the main idea. Sometimes introduces the details.

13 Remember, we talked about how the topic sentence is like a coming attraction, or preview, of a movie. Yes, the Topic Sentence has the same function in a paragraph that a coming attraction has for a movie, it has to grab the reader’s attention so that he or she wants to read more. It has to tell the reader some information so that he knows basically what it is about. However, it cannot reveal everything about the paragraph, or the reader will have no reason to read the paragraph.

14 Review What dos the Topic Sentence introduce?
What should a reader want to do after reading the Topic Sentence?

15 Summarize Today, we’ve begun to learn about the Paragraph Writing Strategy. You’ve learned that a paragraph has four parts, one of the parts is the Topic Sentence. You’ve learned the definition and job of a Topic Sentence. Tomorrow, we will talk about the three types of Topic Sentence you will learn to write, and we will discuss a strategy for writing those sentences.

16 Compound Sentences 1C and 2C.
We will complete the first 5 of 1C and 2C in Compound Sentence Lesson learning sheets. The second part will be your homework.
