Hey! So I guess you’re here cause you wanted to find out a little more about what digital convergence is? Well, it’s kinda what you’re doing right now by listening to this recording; you’re using one device, whether it be a computer, a smartphone or a smart television to view this blog. Most people these days would have one or two primary pieces of technology that they use to accomplish the majority of their daily tasks, take me for example, I’m currently using my smart phone to record this audio, but earlier today it was being used as an alarm clock, a flash light, a camera, a web browser, a diary with reminders and of course, as a phone. This concept of technologies having multiple uses is the basis of digital convergence. With the emergence of digital convergence, the definition of literacy is evolving. The current digital era means that possessing a basic reading and writing literacy is no longer adequate to utilize digital technologies to their fullest potential. There is a new language that needs to be learnt to enable the development of the new set of skills necessary to understand; any visual imagery, video files, and sounds we may view online. As future educators, it is important that we expose our students to as much transmedia play as possible, to ensure they develop a sound transmedia literacy. Development of this literacy encourages the growth of essential learning characteristics for children, such their resourcefulness and sociality.
