The Differences Between Representative Government and Responsible Government
Each Box on the Charts on pages 100 and on page 116 will be looked at in order to see a difference between these two types of government. The Box heading will be in Colour.

(this group looked out for what was best for the elite and wealthy and for Britain, not for the people of the colony.) The Differences Between Representative Government and Responsible Government Legislative Assembly Elected by the voters of the colony. Would suggest bills and raise money through taxes. (Little or no power, could be replaced by the Governor if not raise money. It could only send bills to the Council, who would not consider bills that did not benefit Britain.) Legislative Assembly Elected by voters from several political parties Passed bills and laws. Raise money through taxes. (Had more power. Governor did not remove them, they were elected. Bills and laws were decided on here. Most members were concerned with the good of the colony.)

The Differences Between Representative Government and Responsible Government Voters Male British Citizens Over 21 Land owners / rent for certain amount for 1 year (these were wealthy people or those loyal to Britain. Most people did not own land, merely rented it for part of the year. About 25% of people could vote) Voters Male Over certain age (usually 21) Land owners / renters (lower rental amounts and an increase in the number of people who owned land allowed more of the “regular people” to vote for representatives in government.)

Overall, the colonists did better with Responsible government.
The Differences Between Representative Government and Responsible Government Overall, the colonists did better with Responsible government. Had more say in who ran the government. The people who were elected were more concerned with the colony than with Britain. The “regular people” could be elected and help pass laws and bills that would help the colonists. They were governed by people who lived in the colony, rather than by people who lived in Britain.
