Standard form is used to express and work with very large and very small numbers, without writing out all the zeros. can be written as 3.4 x 109 can be written as 7.2 x 10-5 Both of these types of standard form numbers have two parts, the first part has to be between 1 and ….. and the second part, which has to be x 10n, tells you the size of the number. Your calculator may show these types of numbers differently. Type in x to see how it show the answer of

A x 10n First work out what the first part of the standard form number, this must be between 1 and ……. 540000 5.4 Next work out the second part, this shows the size and must go x 10n 5.4 x 105 One way of doing this is to see how many places the decimal has to move to match its position in the first part. If the number doesn’t have a decimal then it goes on the end. This has moved 5 times, so x 105. A positive power means a large number.
