Generally speaking: When one author is quoted in another author’s work give credit to both. (Smith qtd. in Brown 34). Do not use personal pronouns unless used in a direct quotation. Periods belong outside parenthetical documentation.

When using a person’s name: First time - state it fully and accurately exactly as it appears in the source For subsequent use – use last name only Fictional character’s name – same way as used in the work of fiction Ellipses … - indicate that the quotation does not completely reproduce the original

Documenting in text each time you present information from a source. You must be as specific as possible. Author’s last name and page number – part of text or after information If no author – shortened version of title (usually the first major word of title) If no page #s (internet) - skip

When direct quotations exceed four lines: Begin a new line Indent an additional inch No quotation marks Remains double spaced All lines flush to margin
