The subject is what (or whom) the sentence is about. A verb expresses action, state, or relation between two things. Ex: The dog chases his tail.

Your Turn The first event at the concert is the openers. What is the subject? What is the verb?

Singular subject = singular verb Correct: He is late. Incorrect: He are late. Plural subject = plural verb Correct: They are late. Incorrect: They is late.

What is the verb? Do they agree?

Do Now continued Sometimes junk gets in the way making it difficult to remember what your subject was in the first place. Ex: The balls on the floor of the gym are deflated.

Do now Continued Identify the subject and verb in each sentence. Next, choose the sentence that is written correctly. The first event at the concert are the opening act. Here’s the books about Julius Caesar. Where are the DVDs of your sister’s first and third birthday? Two-thirds of the meatloaf we made for our grandparents are gone.

Do Now continued Be especially careful of compound subjects, which contain an and. In these cases it is easy to forget you are dealing with TWO subjects (plural) not just one (singular). Ex: The basketball was deflated. (singular subject) Ex: The football and basketball were deflated. (compound subject)
