Brief History of Christmas
-Originated by the Roman Catholics who commemorate the December 25th as the day of birth of Christ Child -Gradually come to be celebrated by the non-Catholics as well -One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution.

-Over the years, Nicholas’ popularity spread
and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. -Many years after his death, Nicholas was made a saint. -Today, the date of his death, December 6, is an important date in some countries in Europe.

The Legend of Mistletoe
-Hanging mistletoe in a doorway or from a ceiling became a sign of goodwill and harmony to all visitors. -Mistletoe’s ancient role as “a plant of peace” -Today, kissing under the mistletoe is a popular Christmas custom.

-According to the Anglo-saxons custom,
a man had to kiss any young girl who, without realizing it, found herself accidentally under a sprig of mistletoe hanging from the ceiling. -At Christmas time a young lady under a ball of mistletoe, cannot be refused to be kissed. -Such a kiss could mean deep romance or lasting friendship and goodwill.
