2 Driving License Office
How do they do it? There are many organizations that hold data about each and every one of us. Who has information about you? Registrar of Births Local Council Offices School Doctor Who has data about your parents/adults in your household? Driving License Office Tax Office Passport Office Bank

3 Data is obtained in a number of ways.
Some data has to be given to organizations by law: For example, registering a birth, death or marriage. Some data needs to be given when necessary: For example, details of employment when opening a bank account. Some data is exchanged for rewards: For example, loyalty or reward cards.

4 Types of data stored Name Date of birth Address Time at this address
Occupation Number of children Hobbies Weekly shop total Contents of shopping

5 If your family uses a store loyalty card (Tesco Lotus Club card, Spot card, M card, The One card etc) then the store knows all the information on the previous slide about each customer. If the customer uses a store’s own credit card (eg Central Credit Card), then store will also know their: bank account details loans and other credit cards held salary details property ownership or rent.

6 What’s in it for me?

7 Hidden messages Most products have a bar code – a Unique Product Code – which is scanned when the product is purchased. When the barcode is scanned the product details match up with the EPOS (electronic point of sale) computer system in the store. This in turn sends back the price which is then printed on the receipt. Price Database

8 The barcode does not contain price details.
Country of origin Check digit – checks product is scanned correctly Manufacturer’s number Item/product number – this identifies the product

9 Great technology Most organizations have Electronic Point Of Sales terminals. These are the tills in stores, which are connected to a main computer, that contains a huge database, which contains all product details and prices. EPOS systems allow stores to keep detailed records of what is sold, at what time, by which sales assistant and at which till. This system allows stores to forecast sales based on previous detailed history of sales. Goods are automatically re-ordered based on sales.

11 Electronic Funds Transfer at Point Of Sale (otherwise known as EFTPOS) is the method used to transfer money from a customer’s credit or debit card account to the organization’s bank account. This means that customers do not have to carry large amounts of money. It is better than writing a cheque as there is no maximum limit, as long as there is enough credit or funds available in the customer’s account.

12 That’s personal Organizations use the personal data we give them for a number of reasons….

13

15 Some people believe that records are better kept on paper and locked in a safe place, than stored electronically on a computer. What do you think?
