Today’s Lesson Objectives
In today’s lesson, students will Identify several jobs. Discuss skills needed for those jobs. Make a list of skills needed for a job in their chosen profession. Evaluate personal skills in relation to their chosen profession. Decide what skills they need to improve in order to get a job after graduation.

Goal of Today’s Lesson After today’s lesson, students should be able to: Talk about skills they need in order to gain employment in their chosen field. Talk about skills they are good at as well as skills they need to improve. Use multiple points, if necessary.

Grammatical Structures for Today’s Lesson
Students will practice the following sentence structures. I can do ST (very) well. I’m good at ST. I can’t do ST (very) well. I am not (very) good at ST. ST = something Use brief bullets and discuss details verbally.

Review You just learned how to tell someone if you knew or didn’t know how to do something. EX. I know how to swim. I don’t know how to swim. To ask the question you used: Do you know how to do ST? EX. Do you know how to swim?

Do you know how? Do you know how to play racquet ball?
No. I don’t know how to play racquet ball. Would you like to learn how to play racquet ball? No. I wouldn’t like to learn how to play racquet ball. Yes. I would like to learn how to play racquet ball. Do you know how to bowl? Yes. I know how to bowl. Do you know taekwondo? Yes. I know taekwondo.

Last Class vs This Class
So, you have practiced using Do you know how to do something? Now, you will practice using Can you do something? Are you good at something? Before, you practiced using Yes/No I know how to/don’t know how to do something. Yes. I can do something (very) well. / I am good at something. No. I can’t do something (very) well./ I am not good at something. But first, we will look at some new vocabulary.

Vocabulary Place the following professions into the proper category.
professor | psychologist | journalist nurse | biologist | surgeon fashion designer | graphic designer health education arts science

What do they do? Work in pairs and discuss what the people in these professions do? Be prepared to share with the class. What does a professor do? What does a psychologist do? What does a journalist do? What does a nurse do? What does a biologist do? What does a surgeon do? What does a fashion designer do? What does a graphic designer do?

Needed Skills Now that you know what the people working in each profession does, discuss what skills you think each person needs in order to be good at their job. Skills = things that a person can do well. For example: As an English teacher, I need to be able to explain English grammar to my students.

Skills needed to be a professor. What skills does a psychologist need? Skills needed to be a psychologist. What skills does a journalist need? Skills needed to be a journalist. What skills does a nurse need? Skills needed to be a nurse.

What about you? We have talked about skills required for a few jobs, now it is time to talk about you. As a group, talk about what you want to do when you finish college? What are your strengths?
You have just talked about the skills you have to have so that you can get your dream job. Do you have the skills needed? Take a few minutes and make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. What are you really good at? In what areas do you need to improve? Remember to use the sentence structure I can /can’t do ST | I’m good at / not very good at ST Things I Can Do Well Skills I Need to Improve I can speak English really well. I am not very good at math.

Time to Talk Talk to your classmates and find someone who is good at:
science, learning languages, math, computers, public speaking, finances. Talk to your classmates and find someone who can: write well, use a computer, work in a group well, work alone well, create a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel.
