Personal Connection Write about a time that you felt like no one believed in you and you started not believing in yourself. What did you do to help yourself in this situation? Who else helped you during this situation? Write until I tell you the warm-up is over.

In order to use the whole Prediction Strategy smoothly and automatically, we must be able to quickly say each step of the strategy. Today we will talk about what we do in each step and why. We will also practice naming all of the steps and take a short quiz on the steps.

Rapid Fire Verbal Rehearsal
When I point to you, I want you to name the next step of the strategy as quickly as you can. Try not to look at the whiteboard. You can look at the whiteboard if you need to, but try to not look at the whiteboard too much because I am going to take it away soon. Instead, use the mnemonic device, CLUE, and your own memory.

Numbered Heads Together
Group Work – number off 1 through 3 or 4. You will now work in groups to answer questions about the strategy. I will ask a question and you will put your heads together to come up with an answer. You will have 10 – 15 seconds. When I call your number, stand up and share your answer. Verbal Practice Questions What is the major purpose of the Prediction Strategy? 2. To what kinds of reading materials might you apply this strategy? 3. Very briefly, what are you doing as you use the Prediction Strategy? 4. Why is this helpful? 5. In your own words, tell me what you are to do as you use the Prediction Strategy. What are the steps? 6. When do you actually begin to read a passage? 7. How many times do you actually do the “Examine the Reading Step”? What’s the mnemonic device for remembering the steps of the Prediction Strategy? What are the 4 types of clues you look for? What are the 2 things you can do to link to prior knowledge? What do you actually do during the “Examine the Reading Step”?

Your Turn Now you can review the strategy on your own. You will have to be able to do the following in your own words: Explain the whole strategy in your own words (tell what it is and what it is used for). Name and explain all of the steps on a written quiz. (Use your outline to help you review)

Lesson 7: CLUE – Putting It All Together
Now that you have demonstrated that you know the individual steps of the Prediction Strategy and how to use them, we’ll practice using all of the steps together. We’ll also start using the strategy to answer questions about a passage. Before we do, though, let’s quickly review the strategy.”

Tells us what the passage might be about.
What do the clues suggest and what do I already know? Jogs your memory about what you already know. Start reading. Look for clues, link to prior knowledge, make a new prediction. Repeat.

Excellent! All of the steps of the strategy will help you understand the material you read, whether it is material you need for a job or to prepare for a test or to just enjoy. In short, this strategy will significantly improve your proficiency as a reader. And, as we’ve discussed in the past, becoming a proficient reader will allow you to attain your goals.
