8. Student Membership Student Dues = $25
Note: Student membership is required to participate in DBF, Regional Student Paper Conferences, Paper Design Comps, and to apply for scholarships.
At this time, I do not have student membership broken out by undergrad, Masters and/or PhD.

Current dues structure
1st year student to professional transition dues = $30 (25% of prof dues)
2nd year dues = $60 (50% of prof dues)
3rd year dues = $90 (75% of prof dues)
4th year dues = $120 (100% of prof dues)
discontinued the auto upgrade. Students were not asked if they wanted to transition to prof status, we just did it based upon graduation date. Retention was terrible and students complained.
2007- launched a new annual upgrade campaign, which included calling all eligible upgrades. ROI was poor. (1st yr. dues was $0)
moved to a 3 time a year campaign. Campaign outreach efforts were more aligned with graduation dates. AIAA also moved to a new membership database system and as such tracking and report generation changed.
2011 we made a really big push to encourage students to upgrade because the dues was going to increase in and we were moving to a 3 year dues transition.
2012 moved back to the 3 time a year campaign.
2016 transitioned to an automated marketing campaign, not working as expected. Will change the process in the coming months.
Note: Outreach to graduating students is only part of our problem. Value for the price is a bigger problem. Students don’t feel they are getting additional benefits/services for increased dues.

Informally surveyed my colleagues that are also active in leadership of their professional societies
International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE):
In general, membership has gone up in recent years
Driven by student members and academia
Downturn in industry membership that is concerning
American Astronomical Society& Division of Planetary Sciences (Science focused)
Membership is roughly steady
Good distribution of career levels
Benefit from being the only professional societies for astronomy and planetary science

NIS asked to look at look at a “Clean Sheet” of the TC/PC structure
Spent time understanding current structure and status of the TC/PCs
Collected current data on TCs/PCs
One third of the TCs/PCs not doing well – one third doing more than half the work (e.g. metrics that could be easily identified)
Metrics easy to identify for some committees (awards, etc), not so easy for others (History TC)
Stand-up and sunset – no nurturing or sunset methodology for starting or eliminating committees
SciTech Workshop to help develop path
Value of TC/PC-like part of AIAA – what should they be doing to serve the membership (metrics)
Organization – how should “they” be organized to best serve and engage the membership

24. NIS Evolving into Council New Initiatives Committee (TBR)
The New Initiatives Subcommittee Purpose:
The subcommittee provides a forum for the generation, evaluation, and conceptual planning of initiatives that will improve the Technical Activities of AIAA. The subcommittee reports to the Vice President, Technical Activities, who is an ex-officio subcommittee member.
Council New Initiatives Committee (CNIC):
The Committee provides a forum for the generation, evaluation, and conceptual planning of initiatives that will improve the AIAA Council of Directors. The Committee reports to the Speaker and Division Chiefs of the Council of Directors, who are ex-officio committee members.
