Sexually Transmitted Infections
Target: I will be able to distinguish the various STI’s from one another, describe the ways in which they enter the body, and explain which are curable and which are not Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections transmitted through intimate, usually sexual, contact Pg. 51
4
Chlamydia: A bacterial infection of the urogenital tract, easily cured with antibiotics
“Silent Infection”- most infected people are asymptomatic for weeks after exposure Contact transmission: penis, vagina, mouth, anus, and childbirth
5
Causes painful urination, white discharge, inflammation of the cervix, urethra, prostate, and sterility
6
Gonorrhea: A bacterial infection that causes infertility if not treated with antibiotics
Contact Transmission: penis, vagina, mouth, anus, and Can Infect: cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, urethra, mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum 2nd most common STI in the United States
7
Trichomoniasis: Vaginal STI caused by a parasite; cured with a single dose of antibiotics
Contact Transmission: penis, vagina, mouth, anus, or hands Causes: Foamy, yellow discharge and an unpleasant odor
8
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): An incurable group of viruses that the body has for life.
Causes: Warts on various parts of the body; can lead to cancer Some health effects caused by HPV can be prevented with the vaccination Most common STI in the US
9
Genital Herpes: Highly contagious, incurable infection caused by the herpes simplex virus
Causes: Blisters/open sores, rashes on the genitals Most have mild symptoms and are unaware of infection; unknowingly passing it to others
10
Syphilis: Contagious bacterial infection, spread by open sores; curable with quick treatment
Starts as a painless sore (chancre) on the penis, scrotum, vaginal wall, or cervix If untreated, a rash and white patches appear on the skin in the mouth, throat, and genitals. If treated too late bacteria attacks major organs; years later it may permanently damage the heart, brain, and spinal cord
12
Candidiasis: Fungal infection in the vaginal tract; cured with over the counter medication
The fungus is a normal inhabitant in the vaginal tract When the chemical balance is disturbed, the organisms multiply and cause infection Pubic Lice: Parasitic insects that live on genital hair and feed on blood; killed with lice shampoo
13
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): Incurable virus that causes AIDS by infecting t-cells
AIDS: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome- a disease that attacks the immune system
14
Transmitted when infected bodily fluids (semen, vaginal secretions; blood) enter the body through an open cut, or wound. Summary
15
Connecting the Infections
Create a concept map/web to show the similarities/differences between the 9 STIs that you learned today. Be sure to make note whether they are curable (and how) or incurable *Use a minimum of 4 colors Pg. 50
