About CESCA and Anella Científica

Unified Communications in Anella Científica
Anella Cientifica is deploying a testbed that connects 7 universities (UB, UAB, UPF1, UdG, URV, UdL, UOC1) and CESCA to a unified communications system. The development is done by UPCnet*, a university enterprise born from BarcelonaTech (UPC1), where it is already deployed (e-connect). Several testbed telephones for each participant institution. Every participant has the same telephone number and the same dialing scheme that he used to have before using the platform. Local calls remain local inside the university. Calls among the members are done using the data network. Mobile devices work as desktop phones using the data network. The management of the platform is not centralized, each university can manage its own users, but there’s a single and neutral entity, CESCA, to centralize all the incidents and coordinate the testbed. To foster the collaboration among the universities and reduce costs.

One identifier, many devices
address is the unique identifier Web account for each user to manage their calls, redirections,… Users can bring their corporate telephone number to their smartphones by using any standard SIP application in the smart phone (SipDroid, Counterpath Bria, Acrobits, Media5fone …). This will allow to make and receive calls on the cellphone as if they were at their desktop, even if they're away from home. It works with iPhone, iPad or Android (HTC Nexus One, HTC, wildfire, Samsung Galaxy ACE,…)

Participants come from analog and digital worlds
For institutions with analog and digital telephones and PBX: The testbed network is private and dedicated, to avoid security holes and guarantee the optimal transport of the voice signal. The solution is based on free software, with Asterisk, Kamailio, Apache, Nagios,… HARWARE FOR THE TESTBED (phones, gateway & servers) Servers at UNIVERSITY A SIP trunk UNIVERSITY B PBX Call Manager Analog Digital PSTN CURRENT TELEPHONE SYSTEM

Each user can register from any place and more than once. The calls are made using the desktop number.

Integration of instant messaging, web telephone, contact management, voic , redirection of calls, multi-conference, IM, contacts… A web portal provides access to all the features and services, including a mobile web communicator
