1 Computing Model di PANDA:
Stato e prospettive Stefano Spataro ISTITUTO NAZIONALE DI FISICA NUCLEARE Sezione di Torino Mercoledì, 28 Maggio 2014

2 GSI The FAIR Facility Darmstadt (Germany)
Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research In the incoming future (taking data from 2018) …

3 Well, not so distant future…
forest forest GSI ??? forest

4 Multi purpose detector at FAIR
The Panda experiment AntiProton Annihilations at Darmstadt pp, pA collisions 1.515 GeV/c (p momentum) Multi purpose detector at FAIR Darmstadt (Germany) GSI Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research Charmonium (cc) spectroscopy Open charm spectroscopy Search for gluonic excitations (hybrids - glueballs) Charmed hadrons in nuclei Drell-Yan Single and double Hypernuclei Parton Dist., EM Form Factor… 2017: Detector Assembly 2018: First Data taking

5 The Panda Collaboration
More than 410 physicists from more than 54 institutions in 17 countries

6 The Panda Italy Collaboration
Ferrara (INFN, UNIFE) Frascati (LNF) Genova (INFN, UNIGE) Legnaro (LNR) Pavia (INFN, UNIPV) Torino (INFN, POLITO, UNITO) Trieste (INFN, UNITS) People: 49 FTE: 19 2014) Deputy Spokeperson (D.Bettoni) Physics Coordinator (P.Gianotti) Computing Coordinator (me) PANDA is not officially funded yet

7 Panda Italy Involvement
Target Straw Tube Tracker Micro Vertex Detector Computing Forward Tracking Stations Muon System Hypernuclei Setup

8 PandaGrid: an Alien2-based GRID
It can run on all platforms (source distribution) Several Panda institutions were hosting Alien sites Why Alien? “Reuse” of currently existing manpower Use of parts of already existing resources Strong collaboration with Alien developers Beta-tester (now 2.20) Successfully used for: Central Tracker TDR MVD TDR Many Analyses

13 What is now the future of our distributed computing?
Alien3? PanDa? Big batch farm? No further developments for Alien2 Still some time before taking decisions for PandaGrid Well, not so much time… Currently a FAIR Computing TDR is under preparation 66k cores 12PB disks 12PB/year tape PANDA requirements calculated in 2008 new calculations are needed New technologies should be included (FPGAs, GPUs, many-core CPUs)

14 Distributed T0/T1 centre embedded in Grid/Cloud
APPA CBM LQCD NuStar Panda (66k cores,12PB disks,12PB/y tape) in 2018 cores + grid 40 PB disk 40PB/y archive

15 Triggerless Data Acquisition
Interaction rates of 20 MHz (50 MHz peak) Event size of 15 kB Data rates after front end preprocessing: 80GB/s ‐ 300GB/s H.Xu, TIPP2011, Chicago Ipeak/Iavg ≈ 2-2.5

16 Perspectives The PANDA Computing model is currently under design (just started) With the other FAIR experiments  joint computing TDR (end 2015?) Need for a distributed computing scheme, new middleware? Online computing is becoming important and it merges with offline Computing Model The MONARC model good starting point but must be updated by new technologies Grid, Cloud, Proof, computing on FPGAs and on GPUs… Multi-core CPUs and many-core GPUs → importance of scalable software More democratic and flexible models → Italy can play an important role!
