Actual Causes of Death in the US, 2000 % of All Deaths
The most prominent contributors to mortality in 2000 were tobacco (18%), diet and activity patterns (17%), and alcohol use (4%). Almost ½ of all deaths in 2000 could be attributed to the factors listed on this chart The public health burden these factors impose guides us toward shaping health policy priorities. (Updated August 1, 2008) Strategies that address cancer address other chronic diseases with more than 50% of cancers preventable with lifestyle behaviors. These lifestyle changes are same as the interventions for other chronic disease. Partnership’s ranking of the 25 recommended clinical preventive services offers key information employers can use in setting priorities for purchasing and promoting the use of clinical preventive services. Below are selected cost-saving/cost-effective services for the working population. For a complete listing of services and additional explanation, see Cost-Saving Services n Advising high-risk adults about the benefits and risks of aspirin use for the prevention of cardiovascular events n Tobacco cessation services for adults n Providing children with age-appropriate immunizations n Immunizing adults age 65+ against pneumococcal disease n Screening adults age 65+ for vision problems n Alcohol screening and brief counseling for adults Cost-Effective Services n Flu vaccination for adults age 50+ n Colorectal cancer screening for adults age 50+ (using FOBT, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy) n Screening adults for hypertension and following up with appropriate medication McGinnis, Foege, 2000

Because 58 million americans between the ages of 18-65, a range that includes the majority of employed adults.8 report having at least one such condition. 7 . The number of Americans affected by chronic diseases is expected to escalate right along with the aging of the Baby Boom generation, reaching 171 million by Chronic conditions are responsible for seven out of 10 deaths in the U.S. each year; they limit the daily activities of more than one out of every 10 Americans, and account for at least 40 percent of the nation’s annual health care expenditures.9,10 Cancer is leading cause of death among working adults A recent article in the online publication “Cancer” revealed that the total costs of treating cancer has doubled over the last 20 years, and is now estimated to be over $48 billion due to new cases diagnosed among the aging population as well as an increase in the prevalence of cancer As with many other chronic diseases, there are disparities among race/ethnic groups
