Victorian etiquette, manners were scrutinized by others and subject to gossip
Rising to one's feet when being introduced, or when someone enters the room. Ladies do a little curtsey and men greet with a bow. Emotions were often hid.

Excellence of manners…
It was considered rude to speak loudly in the street. The dining experience held the same standard of having quiet conversation. But one rare thing you may observe in the Victorian era is that all of the ladies would be seated before the men. It was very rude for any man to sit down before all of the ladies had been seated.
