Neuro-Myth Mania: A Threat to the UDL Community
Lisa Beth Carey
4
I love neuroscience & education, but I’m here to warn you that there is a threat to our UDL Community….
5
A Brain Hungry Virus And we are the most at risk…
6
Neuromyth Mania
7
Symptoms of Neuromyth Mania include, but are not limited to:
8
Compulsively clicking on links that contain the words “brain” or the prefix “neuro.”
Applying neuro-myths to instructional decision making Haphazardly purchasing dubious “brain-based” products Using illegitimate “brain-based” products or techniques in the classroom Applying the term “brain-based” to anything related to learning or education Abandoning critical thinking skills in the presence of an fMRI image
9
Knowing some information about the brain and learning.
#1 Risk Factor? Knowing some information about the brain and learning. Dekker, S., Lee, N. C., Howard-Jones, P. , & Jolles, J. (2012). Neuromyths in Education: Prevalence and predictors of misconceptions among teachers. Frontiers in Psychology, 3, 1-8. Sylvan, L. J., & Christodoulou, J. A. (2010). Understanding the role of neuroscience in brain-based products: A guide for educators an consumers. Mind, Brain, and Education, 4(1), 1-7.
10
EVERYONE is Excited about Brain Research!
But, maybe we need to be a bit more cautious?
11
Lesson from a Dead Salmon
Not all imaging studies are good studies.
12
What’s So Bad About Neuromyths?
14
Left Brain / Right Brain is a Myth
I use both sides of my brain at a capacity far exceeding 10% ! (So do you)
15
The Dangers of Neuromyths
If I am “right brained” then I am inherently weak in the left side of my brain. I can NEVER be good at math. I am fixed and trapped by my weaknesses.
16
But the real science is so much more beautiful….
Neuroplasticity means that I can grown and learn and overcome challenges. I can become someone new. I am full of hope, potential, and possibility.
17
Neuromyth Mania Prevention & Treatment for our UDL Community
18
Provide educators with vetted and reliable sources of neuroscience information.
19
I vetted some sources for you : )
20
Encourage interdisciplinary work & conversation in the area of Mind, Brain, and Education research that includes practicing educators.
21
Encourage educators to think critically about “brain-based” products.
22
Make the citation of neuroscience studies and images a common practice among UDL facilitators, coaches, and presenters. (I have no idea what this is… I found it on Google Images. )
23
When it comes to neuroscience & education, we need to be expert learners.
Purposeful & Motivated Learners Strategic, goal-directed learners Resourceful, knowledgeable Learners
24
As a UDL Community, let’s learn and explore neuroscience
As a UDL Community, let’s learn and explore neuroscience. Because together we can…
