The United States of America
The U.S.A. is the third biggest country in the world by size. It consists of 50 states and the District of Columbia, where Washington, the capital city, lies. The country borders the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, Canada and Mexico. “The Star-Spangled Banner” became the U.S. national anthem in 1931. The national symbol is the bald eagle, which is a protected species. Another important symbol is the American flag, also called the Stars and Stripes. The 13 horizontal stripes represent the first 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain, while the 50 stars represent the 50 American states. ROTH, Pam, (Bubbels). There is no official language for the whole country, but the national language is English. Spanish is the second most-commonly spoken language. The USA is a constitution-based federal republic. The Head of State is the President, helped by a Vice-President. In 2013 the President is Barack Obama. There are two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The population is about 315,000,000. White Americans form more than 70% of the population. They are followed by Black Americans (12%), Asian (5%) and Native Americans (1%). The United States has always been a nation of immigrants. MILLER, Hank. Three Generations of Navajos. In: Wikipedia: the free encyclopedia [online]. San Francisco (CA): Wikimedia Foundation, [cit ]. History The original inhabitants of the US are American Indians, or Native Americans, who arrived from Eurasia crossing the Bering Strait more than 12,000 years ago. The Norse were the first Europeans to reach the country around the year Spanish explorers arrived in Florida in 1513, followed by French, Dutch and English explorers. They established colonies and displaced the native peoples (Native Americans). In the XVIII century Britain’s 13 North American colonies fought for their independence, starting with an act of protest, the “Boston Tea Party” ,which was followed by the American Revolution. This brought to the Declaration of Independence on 4 July The 13 American colonies became the 13 United States of America in The Civil War between the North and the South began in and ended in The main reasons for the war were the abolition of slavery and the will to stop the rebellion of the Southern states, which wanted to become independent from the North. The Northern states won the war. Slavery was abolished but the situation of the Afro-Americans really improved only after the civil rights battles of the 1960s. GARDNER, Alexander. America took part to the Two World Wars.
In the 1800s there were fights between the Native Americans and the “white people”. Between 1890 and 1921 almost 19 million people from all over the world arrived to the USA. The immigration has continued to these days. America took part to the Two World Wars. In 1929 there was the Great Depression. The Cold War and the conflict in Vietnam dominated the second half of the XX century. In the XXI century the USA are active in the fight against terrorism, following the terrorists’ attack which destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City on 11 September 2001. The Native Americans Originally most Native Americans belonged to nomadic cultures based on horse culture and seasonal bison hunting. Since European settlers arrived, Native Americans were dispossessed of their land, were obliged to move westwards, and later were confined to reservations. Many of them died of the diseases that the “white people” brought from Europe. They also were forced to assimilate as U.S. citizens. Nowadays the majority of Native Americans live in big western cities. Only about 1,000,000 out of 2,500,000 of them live in reservations. Many of them live in poverty, and use alcohol and drugs. The Northeast: New England
This region, together with the mid-Atlantic, is densely populated, especially the area from Boston to Washington. This area is called Northeast megalopolis. Somebody from this region is often called a Yankee, meaning a descendant from colonial New England, usually a Puritan, whose qualities are honesty, realism and thriftiness. Boston: it is one of the oldest American cities. It is a centre of higher education. In Cambridge, north of Boston, two of the world’s most famous universities are situated: the oldest American university, Harvard University, and the M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The Northeast: the mid-Atlantic
2. The mid-Atlantic It is often called “the typical American region”, as here there has always been religious pluralism and ethnic diversity. Nowadays, it is one of the richest region in the USA. New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. are situated in this area. Washington D.C. is the capital of the USA. The population is 600,000. It is the centre of the federal government of the United States: the President lives here, and the Congress and the Supreme Court lie in the city. Famous buildings are the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. PROIMOS, Alex. Front of The White House ( ). In: Wikipedia: the free encyclopedia [online]. It is called “the city that never sleeps”, and also “the Big Apple”.
New York City: it is the largest city of the US, and has been the capital. It has a population of about 8,000,000. Because of the amount of immigrants who live here, about 37% of the city's population is not native. The city is divided into five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. It is called “the city that never sleeps”, and also “the Big Apple”. It’s a city of skyscrapers, such as the Empire State Building, New York’s tallest skyscraper, and the Chrysler Building. Other landmarks are the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Times Square, Central Park and the One World Trade World Center (or Freedom Tower), which is the tallest building in the USA and stands where the 6 World Trade Center did before being destroyed in 2001. the South 3. The South (nicknamed Dixie) Southerners are famous for being extremely polite and hospitable. The climate is tropical and sub-tropical, with hot and humid weather conditions. The region was famous for its agriculture, mainly the tobacco and cotton plantations. Sadly, it was also famous for the black slave labour. New Orleans is a unique city. It’s on the Mississippi River, and is one of the busiest ports in the world. The original settlement was French, and French culture is still permanent. Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) is one of the most famous carnival celebrations in the world. The city was devastated by the hurricane Katrina in Luckily, the historical French Quarter remained almost untouched. Other famous places in the South are the Everglades (sub-tropical wetlands), Miami, Atlanta (the site of The Coca-Cola Company), and the amusement park Disney World. WATT, Justin. Paddleboat Natchez. The Midwest The Midwest
In this region there are no extreme formations, which means there aren’t any mountains, nor deserts, nor oceans. The Wild West began in the mid-west. The area is covered with farms. The major industries can be found in Detroit and Chicago. Detroit is nicknamed the Motor City and Motown because of its car industry. General Motors (with brands such as Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and Opel), Chrysler and Ford Motor have their headquarters in or around Detroit. In the city there also used to be the famous record company Motown, which produced artists such as Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. REED, Benjamin. The Great Lakes (Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario) are found on the border between the USA and Canada and form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. Chicago (nicknamed Windy City) is the third biggest city in the US. It is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan. Kraft Foods and Boeing are two companies based in the city. In Chicago there used to be the biggest community of Czech immigrants in the US. Prague is one of Chicago’s twin towns. The West: The Northwest
The Northwest comprises Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The Northwest is identified with the Old West, a part of America’s folklore, a territory where people from the Midwest set in the second half of the XIX century looking for a new life or for gold (gold rush). The characteristic figure is that of the cowboy. In this region the headquarters of some of the biggest American companies are situated, for example Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Amazon.com, Starbucks and Nike. The biggest city in the Northwest is Seattle. It is a centre of trade with Asia. It is famous for its seafood. SCHWEN, Daniel. Seattle 7. In: Wikipedia: the free encyclopedia [online].
