Guide Questions What words describe the beach and two what senses these descriptions appeal to? Reread paragraph 1 on page 185 and visualize how Papi’s car looked, felt, and sounded. Explain how sensory details and background knowledge help you understand the text? This story is realistic fiction. How do you think the characters will act and talk? Describe their relationships to each other? Hoe does the breeze change as Fernando’s family drives to the beach? What can you infer from this comparison?
15
Guide Questions Contrast how Luisa and Mari walked with how Javi walked. Reread paragraph4 on page 189. Think of a time when you were in a difficult situation. Did you or another person react like Luisa did? How does Fernando’s description help you visualize what a sea urchin looks like? How does this help you adjust your understanding of what happens next? How would it feel to have a spiny sea urchin stuck in your foot? What do you think could happen to Javi if his foot isn’t fixed soon?
16
Guide Questions Reread paragraph 4 on page 191. How does Fernando’s story of Javi’s injury compare with what really happened? Why did Fernando hesitate before telling his story? Why did Luisa and Mari stare in disbelief? Tell how you think the character’s felt. Evaluate the author’s use of sensory details to enrich the story. Support your answer.
17
Guide Questions What is the author’s purpose?
Understanding the author’s purpose helps you know what to look for as you read. Read If you At the Beach again, what would you pay attention to? Why? Imagine that Fernando never told Mami the truth about what happened. How do you think he would have felt? Summarize the text, maintaining meaning and logical order.
