5 INTRODUCTION “Effective management is being increasingly recognised
as the most critical element required for the success of any organisation. The actions and decisions of managers therefore have a profound impact on the success of the company.” Management at all levels is very important including self management.

6 WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?

7 DEFINITION OF MANAGEMENT
“Management is an art of getting things done through and with the people in formally organized groups. It is an art of creating an environment in which people can perform and individuals can co-operate towards attainment of group goals”. According to F.W. Taylor, “Management is an art of knowing what to do, when to do and see that it is done in the best and cheapest way”.

8 MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS The four basic Management functions Includes ;
Planning means defining goals for future organizational performance and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them. Organising is the process of defining and grouping the activities of the entire process and establishing the authority and relationship among them.

9 MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS The four basic Management functions Includes ;
Leading: is the use of influence to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals Controlling; Controlling means monitoring employees' activities, determining whether the organization is on target toward its goals, and making correction as necessary.

10 MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS The fundamental functions of a manager links up in a specific manner to form a process which is a logical sequence of actions.

11 PLANNING Organisations function in an uncontrollable environment, to survive, organisations must plan to be proactive in their interaction with the environment. Planning is the primary function of management and is the task of all managers. The character and scope of a manager's planning varies according to the manager's authority and the nature of plans outlined by his superiors.

Planning gives direction. It helps to minimise mistakes. Helps in proactive management. Helps to evaluate and control progress. Helps in achieving the desired results.

What do you want to accomplish? The long- and short-range objectives that managers identify provide purpose, meaning, vitality, and direction for their lives and business. Objectives must be:

How are you going to accomplish this? In this step, managers determine what must be done to accomplish the objectives that they have established. This is the action part of the planning process. Draw up an action plan, using the following five steps: State objective Project activities list Identification of physical and personnel resources required Identification of obstacles that might prevent successful completion project timetable

19 PLANNING PROCESS – EVALUATION
Schedule a periodic check on progress. Once managers decide exactly where they want to go and how they are going to get there, they must schedule periodic checks to see that each goal is attained. These enable managers to: Evaluate where they are Check off milestones Prepare for a review with their own supervisor Recognise deviations Identify the methods needed to get back to schedule.

20 CONCLUSION Planning is neither a panacea nor a substitute for imagination and creativity. But planning that is based on an accurate diagnosis, realistic objectives, effective use of resources, and continuous evaluation provides a road map for developing a successful operation and individual.

21 CASE STUDY- PLANNING You have been successful in a job interview as a Sales Manager. You are taking over an existing team which is very much under man power. The team which was previously a national best team has been performing poorly in all the imperatives except average premium.
