6.1 Case Study 1
12
Case Study Instructions
Read the Case Study silently and ponder it alone. Discuss it in pairs. Discuss it as a large group.
13
Case Study 1 Chris is the pastor of Word of God Church. The church building is aging, and the roof leaks. New religious education material is desperately needed for the children. The men’s club believes that the church should take out a loan from the diocese in order to make much needed repairs. The women’s club wants to take out a loan for a new sound system, since the current system isn’t working, and people cannot hear when the liturgy is being celebrated. Meanwhile, the diocese is asking each church to contribute more money to their outreach fund. Chris feels that each group believes that their need is the most important. Parish meetings turn into shouting matches with each group arguing both among themselves and with the other groups. What should Chris do? **Back to instructions

Case Study Instructions

16
Case Study 2 JD is fundamentally opposed to the pastor’s views on [**determine three issues to address in your JPIC local group**]. Discuss what you would do if you were JD in each of these positions: (a) assistant pastor, (b) director of religious education, (c) director of music, (d) bishop. **Back to instruction

6.3 Role Play
18
Role Play Instructions
Insofar as possible, each member of the group should play a role in one scenario and be an observer in the other. Time should be given for each group to plan their strategies. Observers may wish to take notes during the role play. They should comment on what they see based on the material covered in Units 4 and 5. **More instructions
19
Role Play Instructions continued
Include observations concerning listening skills, body language, clarity of communication, etc. When commenting on what they see, both observers and participants should be mindful of what they learned about giving and receiving feedback. Time should be allotted for each group to debrief the first scenario before going on to the second scenario. **Back to instructions **Start Role Plays
20
Role Play--Scenario 1 Jack and Jill come to you one Sunday after church. They tell you that they would like to make a sizable gift to the church, but they are hesitant, because you and your team do not seem to be as interested in taking care of the refugees in the community as Jack and Jill think you should be. Until you can promise to do more for the poor in your immediate area, they will not give their money to the church. Last Sunday you were approached by Betty and Isabelle who adamantly stated that they would not give any more of their large donations to the church unless and until you quit putting so much emphasis on “those people” and took better care of those who contributed to the church. **Back to instructions
21
Role Play-- Scenario 2 Dick and Jane are members of your church who own a contracting business. Jane is President of the Altar Society and Dick is the head usher. They have contributed generously over the years. Dick has put a bid in to some major repairs. You doubt whether their company is able to do the job adequately. Joe, another parishioner, has approached you with a plan to do the repairs. His plan seems even less adequate than Dick and Jane’s. You believe that the best work would be done by a company of a rival tribe or region, and it would cost considerably more than either Dick and Jane’s or Joe’s. The integrity of the church structure is at stake. You seek advice from your trusted associates. **Back to instructions
