Brainstorming better utilization of OpenGov data for job growth.
PROJECT STORY | PATHFINDER JOB APP Brainstorming better utilization of OpenGov data for job growth.

PATHFINDER JOB APP CONCEPT
PROJECT OVERVIEW Over the course of nine months Slalom worked to create a product proof-of-concept which would merge OpenGov and for profit job data to help new job seekers. This app was presented to The Whitehouse as one of 6 teams working to tackle job growth in America. Great feedback was given by Joe Biden, Bruce Andrews, Joseph Perez and Whitehouse CTO Megan Smith. PROJECT CHALLENGE: The Whitehouse initiated a jobs ‘data jam’ where team met to brainstorm products which could utilize OpenGov data to improve job growth for a variety of demographics. This field of 21 teams was cut down to 6. The remaining teams were asked to scope a full product and demo their app concept for the Whitehouse. Our team focused in on recent grad and exiting college studies. Few products in this space give their audience easy access to reliable data without sponsored bias. This makes it difficult to make decision about degrees and which jobs people should pursue. HOW WE HELPED: Our team produced a product story that was delivered to The Whitehouse with great acceptance. We told a story about a recent college grad that clearly highlighted how valuable a non-judgmental data-forward app could be to a job seeker. In talking about a full release it was highlighted that our team ‘made the perfect guidance counselor’ in an app that provided quick access to valuable data. This project has been further referenced by the administration when talking about technology and job growth.

IA, FLOW ARCHITECTURE & USER TESTING
PATHFINDER JOB APP CONCEPT IA, FLOW ARCHITECTURE & USER TESTING Our team lead multiple rounds of testing to validating the right way for our audience to digest the data they were looking for. A mixture of paper-prototyping and low-fidelity Axure prototypes helped us understand what information was valuable at what points in the process. This also helped us understand what nomenclature and taxonomy prompted the right inquiries and activity. Knowing that people wanted to do open-ended search for both Degrees and Job-titles helped us better understand how we needed data structured and sourced for a full MVP product release. It also helped us better understand our requirements for visual design.

RAPID PROTYPING & VISUAL CONCEPTING
PATHFINDER JOB APP CONCEPT RAPID PROTYPING & VISUAL CONCEPTING For our product demo we needed to quickly iterate on both design and experience as we refined critical user pathways for a full product proof of concept. We progressed from paper prototyped to Axure, to Flinto to Proto.io as we ratcheted in a more confident product offering. As design and branding advanced we needed prototyping software that could create reusable and object oriented design parts for rapid refinement and device localization.

PRODUCT DEMO & ROLLOUT SCOPING
PATHFINDER JOB APP CONCEPT PRODUCT DEMO & ROLLOUT SCOPING The end-result was a product demo where the vice president and key-members of the cabinet got to ask questions and inquire about the full product vision. Our team was the only team who produced a fully clickable prototype to hand-off. This enabled us to continue conversations about a full product release in ways other teams we not prepared for. To the left is a photo from the event as tweeted by Vice President’s office. We are super proud of this work and were honored to be a part of such a fun brainstorming activity.
