SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY

General Guidelines Conduct yourself in a responsible manner;

Know the procedure before starting experiments
Follow all instructions carefully and start immediately to avoid wasting time

Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor

Do not eat food,drink beverages or chew gum in the lab

Stay out of the stock room except in emergencies

Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!

- Keep work areas clean and tidy - Keep aisles clear - No purses or backpacks in the lab

Eyewash Station Located at the back of the lab You must rinse your eyes for 15 minutes WEAR GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES!

Safety Shower Located at the back of the lab Used when chemical is spilled on a large area of one’s body

Fire Extinguisher Located by the front door Dry Chemical
Effective on all types of fires Using the fire extinguisher: Step 1: Locate the extinguisher Step 2: Pull the pin Step 3: Aim at fire Step 4: Squeeze the handle

Exit Room, go right, proceed to baseball field and line up between Mustang Mall and Meadows alphabetically by instructor Meadows Ave Mustang Mall Baseball Field X Room 250

Dispose of all chemical waste properly according to instructions;
Clean equipment and work area after use; Return all materials to proper location *There is a list of permanent lab equipment in the top drawer at each station

Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals
Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab X

When diluting acids always add the acid to the water
“Do as you oughta – add acid to water” Always use distilled or deionized (DI) water to make a solution, NEVER tap water DI water is located in the dispenser at the back of the lab

Never handle broken glass with your bare hands
Use a dust pan and brush located next to the broken glass bin Place broken glass in glass disposal container First Aid kit is located underneath the fume hood

Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware;
Never leave a lit burner unattended; When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others; THERE IS AN EMERGENCY SHUT OFF BUTTON FOR THE GAS LINE ON THE WALL AT THE FRONT OF THE LAB AREA

Never look down into a container that is being heated;
Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!

Analytical Balances Never put chemical directly on the balance pan – use a weigh boat if necessary Always leave the balance clean and tared (zeroed)
