10.8 The Power Theorems After studying this section, you will be able to apply the power theorems.
2
(Chord- Chord Power Theorem)
S EV EN = EL ES V O E L N Theorem If two chords of a circle intersect inside the circle then the product of the measures of the segments of one chord is equal to the product of the measures of the segments of the other chord. (Chord- Chord Power Theorem)
3
(Tangent-Secant Power Theorem)
(TP)2 = PR PQ Q O T P Theorem If a tangent segment and a secant segment are drawn from an external point to a circle, then the square of the measure of the tangent segment is equal to the product of the measures of the entire secant segment and its external part. (Tangent-Secant Power Theorem)
4
B PB PA = PD PC A D C P Theorem If two secant segments are drawn from an external point to a circle, then the product of the measures of one secant segment and its external part is equal to the product of the measures of the other secant segment and its external part. (Secant-Secant Power Theorem)
5
Example 1 Find x, y and z 3 6 2 z 3 x 4 8 16 2 y
6
Example 2 Tangent segment PT measures 8 cm. The radius of the circle is 6 cm. Find the distance from P to the circle.
