In Spain children’s last names come from the mother’s maiden name and their middle name come from their fathers last name. Picasso’s father was a professional drawing teaching and took Pablo as his pupil at the age of 10. He had his first exhibit at the age of 13.

Science and Clarity 1897 Family moved to Barcelona, Spain where his father became professor of drawing at the local art academy and Pablo was enrolled at 16. Science and Clarity won Honorable Mention at Madrid’s art competition and Picasso’s career was launched. The doctor is really his father.

Moulin de la Galette 1900 In 1898 he fell ill and had to retire to the country side with a friend. Months later he returned to Barcelona a different person. He had dropped his fathers name and was taking his artwork in a different direction away from his father’s wishes. By late 1901, he no longer used the initial R and was just Pablo Picasso. Joined a group of Catalan Artists who would hang out together at Café Els Quatre Gats (The 4 Cats). It would be the subject of a lot of his paintings and his next exhibit. Time to go to Paris, France the art center of the world at that time. He left Spain with his studiomate, Casagemas, for France only to return to Spain in a couple of months. Casagemas had fallen in love but was scorned and unable to get over her. Picasso could not cheer him up and left him alone. Casagemas returned to France and attempted to shoot her but falled so he shot himself to death. Picasso struggled to get over the loss of his friend and blamed himself.

Sculpture 1967 This sculpture is untitled and can be found in Chicago. It cost $351, to build. Picasso was offered $100, but did not accept payment.

She was in her mid-twenties and a French model of Picasso, who was in his seventies when the affair started) - Jacqueline Roque (who became Picasso's second wife. She was 27 and he was 79) Only legitimate child was Paulo born to Olga.
