1 Objectives The student will be able to define perception in their own words The Student will be able to interpret illusions and explain why their perception may be different from their fellow classmates The student will be able to describe how perception can result in conflicts

2 Chapter 8 Section 3 Perception

3 Perception Receives information from the senses and organizes and interprets it into meaningful experiences-unconsciously Allows us to confront changes in environment Need to adapt to change

4 Principles of Perception Organizations
Brain Always trying to make sense Creates wholes out of bits and pieces (Gestalt) Our brain will automatically fill in the blanks

5

6 Illusions Incorrect perceptions
Created when perceptual cues are distorted so that our brains cannot correctly interpret space, size and depth cues.

23 Figure Ground Perception
Pick out the figure vs. background

24 Perceptual Inference Automatically and unconsciously we fill in gaps.
EX: When we hear a barking noise as you approach a house you assume it is a dog, not cat

25 Learning to Perceive Perceiving is something that people learn to do
Influenced by our needs, belief, and expectations Perception of old women as honest, would not think twice about leaving a wallet with one

26 Subliminal Perception
Subliminal messages-brief auditory or visual messages that are presented below the absolute threshold

27 Depth Perception The ability to recognize distances and three-dimensionality Psychologists place infants on large tables and found that they most likely will not crawl over the edge

28 Constancy Changing conditions-still see and seem the same

29

30 Extrasensory Perception
Extrasensory perception (ESP) is the purported ability to acquire information by paranormal means independent of any known physical senses or deduction from previous experience.

31 Types of ESP Telepathy- the sensing of thoughts or feelings without help from the 5 known senses Precognition-telling the future Psycho kinesis-moving objects w/your mind Clairvoyance-the awareness of people, objects or events without the help of the 5 known senses

32 Homework First paragraph (at least six complete sentences) - Explain the word perception in your words and how the illusions we looked at and how perception can differ from individual to individual. Second paragraph (at least six complete sentences) - Give an example where an individual’s perception led to a conflict. Explain the circumstance. Explain why the situation became a conflict and determine if the situation could have been handled differently.
