4 School Preparations… I work as a State Accreditation Lead Evaluator and have visited 2 schools with immersion programs (South Ogden/ Butler Middle) I have been attending State Office Consortium Meetings at the U of U twice a year. I have the prescribed Chinese Curriculum and supports on order. And most importantly we have found a teacher for our program.

5 Mr. Yao Yao A current Chinese Immersion Teacher at Stewart.
Is only with us part time for the first year We will be sharing him with Farmington Junior High for one year

The 7th grade course will be taught in the afternoon to accommodate a shared schedule with Farmington Junior. 5th Period Culture & Media (25 students per semester) 6th Period Chinese Immersion (25 students) 7th Period Chinese Immersion (25 students) In 2017 we will add another class of student’s, Mr. Yao will be with us full time and the 8th grade portion will be taught in the morning.

7 CJH Chinese Immersion Philosophy
Chinese Immersion at CJH is considered a Honors Level program Students should be highly motivated Grades will reflect content competency not effort. Students should have a natural curiosity and a desire to be challenged. Students should have high expectations for themselves and others. The End goal of the Chinese Immersion Program at CJH is passing the AP Chinese Exam with a 3 or higher score in the 9th grade. If this is not your goal as a parent, maybe the program is not right for you or your student.

8 Culture and Media Course
Designed as a companion class for DLI Honors. Heavy emphasis on Chinese Electronic communication (websites, , text) etc. Designed to prepare students for the AP Chinese Exam in the 9th grade. Parents who wish to opt out of the Culture and Media course need to meet with an administrator about your concerns.

9 Will you offer Introductory Chinese?
Not in the initial year… The plan to is to incorporate introductory Chinese when it can be sustainable long term for our school. Part of that sustainability is having a qualified teacher with the capabilities to teach the course.

10 Community Concerns… Can our students access band and Orchestra and still be in Chinese Immersion Program? Yes Can my student take Summer PE to get their PE Credit? No My student is involved in specialized sports programs and will be on a reduced schedule. Can this work the Chinese Program? It Depends We are concerned that our child will be isolated from other students who are not in the Chinese Immersion Program. Will that be a problem? No

11 Principal Concerns… How do I bring in the Chinese Immersion program and not loose staff? Mission Accomplished How do I balance course substitutions and allow access to Fine Arts Programs (Band & Orchestra)? Mission Accomplished How do I equitably balance the financial needs of this program? Accomplished through grant funding from the State of Utah. How do I provide a quality Chinese Immersion program to our community that is worthy of emulation? Close Stewardship of the Program and willingness to be flexible adaptable as the program changes over time. How will I known when this is accomplished? AP Pass Rates better than District and State Averages.

12 Final Thoughts… No one person has all the answers…
The Chinese Immersion program will be a work in progress over the next couple of years as it matriculates into our school. Counselors are available after Spring Break (April) to meet with parent about specific concerns and unique scheduling issues for the school year. We are excited to welcome your student to our program and we are actively planning for a successful transition.
