1 Migration in the Sea 2 September 2014

2 Migration Migration is simply the movement of a large group of organisms from one location to another. Ex. Birds fly south in the winter. Salmon swim upstream to spawn young.

3 Salmon Long range migration Migrate to spawn young Excellent Osmoregulators

4 Leatherback Sea Turtle
Long migration range. Can exist in cold and warm waters. Deep-diving marine reptile

5 How do we track marine organisms?
Tagging & tracking Polar & Geostationary Satellites Remote Sensing

6 Polar Vs. Geostationary
Polar: Lower orbiting (833 Km), superior pole images, data from all over Terra. Geostationary: Higher orbiting (36K Km), same location, weather-tracking

7 Satellite Transmitters
Smart Position or Temperature Transmitting Tags (SPOTs) Satellite Relay Data Loggers Popup Archival Tags

8 SPOTs Mostly used for air-breathers (whales, dolphins, seals). Only transmits when animal surfaces to breathe.

9 Satellite Relay Data Loggers
SRDLs… Measures physical characteristics of water (salinity, temp, depth). Answers question: how do oceans conditions affect animal movement.

10 Pop Up Archival Tags Used for larger fishes (sharks, tuna, grouper). Preset to pop off after a specific time period and float to the top and transmit collected data.

11 Remote Sensing Satellites
Remote sensing is the science of collecting and interpreting data from satellites. Helps explicate movement Involves collaboration

12 Check on Learning #15 Two reasons why animals migrate #27 Two types of satellites #4 One kind of transmitting device #19 What is remote sensing #10 Organism SPOTs are used for #13 Gather shark data, type of transmitter #22 Animal with longest migration range

13 5-min Break Do not abuse my generosity! 5 minutes; That’s it… Stand up, stretch, rotate shoulders, take a deep breath, check messages without penalty, etc. After 5 minutes…be ready to get back to work.
