1 College Timeline For Seniors

2 It’s your senior year! And these are a few things you may be thinking about... Brain storm with the students what kind of activities that they have to look forward to in their senior year -grad night, prom, senior night, etc. What else should they be thinking about? -COLLEGE!!!

Make a Plan “Any Great Journey, big or small, begins with a Plan” Talk to your parents (or other family members) and school counselor about your college plans and options Make a list of colleges and universities that interest you Mark your calendar or planner with important dates including college admissions and financial aid deadlines Also, you can talk to your CSUF Titan Choices Intern about college options, timelines, and resources available!

Size College expenses Housing Activities Academics: MAJORS, class size, student-to-faculty ratio Admission requirements : average GPA, required tests, rank Location : distance from home Environment: type of school (public/private; 2 yr. vs. 4 yr), school setting (urban/rural), co-ed, religious, closest city nearby, etc. Size: enrollment and physical size of campus College expenses : tuition, room & board Housing: availability, options, food plans, overall cost of living Activities: clubs & organizations, sports, sororities/fraternities, internships

5 Visit Campuses Take campus tours Attend open houses or preview days
Talk to faculty/staff, students, etc. -Give personal example of what you did (if you attended WELCOME or if you took a campus tour and how that affected your decisions) Questions students should ask: What academic programs or majors are available? What is the faculty to student ratio? What is the average classroom size? How many students attend the University What is the cost of attendance? What are the housing options? When should you apply for housing?

6 College Life Find out about: Student clubs and organizations
Sports/athletic programs The surrounding city and what it has to offer Accessibility to public transportation

7 Your College Choice Ask yourself…
Is this a place I can see myself in for four years? Do they have programs/clubs I can benefit from? Is the environment friendly? Can I afford to live on campus? What does this school have that the others do not (& vice- versa)?

9 September-October TIPS:
Use on-line College Search engines to explore campuses Narrow your college list to about five to eight colleges Create a Plan A and a Plan B Register and take the SAT I, ACT and SAT II (if needed) Colleges electronically receive scores about three weeks after the test Apply to Cal State Universities October 1 – November 30 Apply at TIPS: Request brochures on admissions and financial aid Attend your school or district College Night or Fair Get a head start on your personal statement for the UCs. If you haven’t done so, ask your teachers or counselors for letters of recommendation as needed

10 November – December TIPS: California State University
Apply between October 1st - November 30th University of California Apply between November 1st – November 30th Independent Colleges and Universities Application deadlines vary. Check with specific campuses. TIPS: Make sure application is complete Check if schools have received official SAT/ACT scores and high school transcripts Check your and student portal!

11 January-March Submit FAFSA between January 1 and March 2 of your senior year Attend a Financial Aid Night if available Four weeks after submitting your FAFSA, review your SAR (Student Aid Report) for accuracy Apply for scholarships Submit 7th semester transcripts (By March 22nd, 2013) Register and take placement exams (by May 4th, 2013) FYI: Most private universities like USC require the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE in addition to FAFSA

12 April - May Attend “Welcome to Cal State Fullerton Day” (April 13th, 2013) Review admission decisions and financial aid award packages Accept your admission (or submit your Student Intent to Enroll form (SIE) and pay for your enrollment deposit (By May 1st, 2013) Register for New Student Orientation (CSUF - By May 17th, 2013 at 5 p.m.) Send the enrollment form and deposit check to the college of your choice (if needed) Register and take placement exams (if required) If you're waitlisted by a college, contact the admission department to inquire about next steps If you're not admitted to any of the colleges to which you applied, find out what colleges are still accepting admission applications and speak with a counselor to review all options.

13 June - July Send your final official transcripts to the college of your choice (By July 16th, 2013) Send thank-you note Attend New Student Orientation Register for fall classes See an academic advisor to help guide you through this process

15 Remember Your senior year grades will count!
Be organized and write down important admission deadlines Check your University and Student Portal at least once a week You are “conditionally admitted” which means you must successfully satisfy ALL admissions requirement and deadline including getting good grades your senior year!
