What is an Independent Living Center?
An independent living center is a consumer controlled, community based, cross disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agency that is designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities. Independent living services maximize the ability to live independently in the environment of their own choosing. The 28 independent living centers offer five core services mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, Title VII, Chapter 1 and H.R th Congress: Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act: Information and Referral, Advocacy, Independent Living Skills, Peer Counseling, and Transition. California added two additional core services: Personal Assistance Services and Housing. ILC's also provide individual assistive technology (AT) services to consumers. CRIL’s Mission Community Resources for Independent Living is a peer-based, self-identified, disability organization that advocates and provides resources for people with disabilities to improve lives and make communities fully accessible.

CRIL CRIL provides services countywide - CRIL operates three full-service offices, located in Hayward, Livermore and Fremont, and provides residents throughout southern and eastern Alameda County with complete and easy access to independent living services, disability resources and advocacy.

CRIL CRIL continues to make the commitment – CRIL’s has staff who can speak English, Spanish, Farsi, Dari and Cantonese and who come from the variety of cultures in California.

CRIL ~ DANY Conference The 2 day conference is designed for youth, ages 16 – 28, with disabilities to take an active role in developing a DANY Group in their local communities. The Conference will also focus on organization’s administrative staff and give them tools for staff to support the development of a DANY Group in their areas.

Tips on finding a Job What is the ideal job for you?
List five activities that interest you. List five skills that you would like to use on the job. List five personal work values that are important to you. Define your ideal work environment. At home, your local library, at your local career center Use the internet, for example, Craigslist: search for a variety of different jobs near you at Monster: One of the top job boards includes career advice, resume tips, and interview tips at

Other options Talk to your friends and family – Let them know your interests because they might know the perfect job for you! Your friends and family might have a job opening where they work. Word of mouth is a great way to find a job!

One Stop Career Centers
Visit your local one-stop center. They offer universal resources available to the general public for the purpose of seeking jobs, training and education.

Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)
The DOR is a state agency that provides assists to people with disabilities to enter the work force or to return to work and to live independently in their communities. Services 1. Resume Development 2. Interview Techniques 3. Job placement services 4. Transportation Assistance

Alta California Regional Center
Regional centers are nonprofit corporations that contract with the Department of Developmental Services to provide or coordinate services and supports for individuals with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities. There are 21 Regional Center offices throughout California to provide a local resource to help find and access the many services available to individuals and their families.

What is Travel Training?
Mobility travel training is a program for people with disabilities and seniors Individual or group trips – FREE of cost Gain confidence while learning to safely and independently use public transportation Learn and memorize routes, fares, and train/bus knowledge, apply for Clipper card Practice using mobility devices!

How to get started… Pick a place you would like to learn to travel to and get in contact with a travel trainer! Complete basic intake/assessment, set goals Apply for Clipper card Learn the skills to plan trips to any destination. Safely and confidently travel all around the Bay Area!
