Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Sections: 11.1 On-line resources at the IAEA 11.2 IAEA’s Postal Dosimetry Audit 11.3 Quality Assurance Team for Radiation Oncology (QUATRO) 11.4 Other resources In this module we will obtain a brief overview of some available resources to assist our quality and safety efforts. There are two places on the IAEA website where wealth of relevant information is collected and we’ll look at those two places first. Then, in the next sections, we will look at the extensive dosimetry and clinical audit programs developed and operated by the Agency. Finally in this module, we will briefly mention other sources of information and guidance and also introduce the AAPM’s Safety Profile Assessment.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea OBJECTIVES We will explore two locations on the IAEA website: Radiation Protection of Patients Human Health Campus The objectives for this first section are to explore IAEA’s radiation protection of patients website and the Human Health Campus. Both are rich sources of safety and quality information for the radiation Treatment Community.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea OBJECTIVES We will explore two locations on the IAEA website: Radiation Protection of Patients Human Health Campus First we will explore the radiation protection of patients website.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients The Radiation Protection of Patients website provides information for health professionals, member states, patients and the public. There is an area focusing on radiotherapy.
7
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients In the radiotherapy specific area or the rpop website there is information on radiation protection standards, accident prevention, including a review of radiotherapy accidents and some suggestions for how to improve safety in brachytherapy, external beam radiotherapy and endovascular brachytherapy. The examples of incidents we used throughout this program, and which we introduced in Module 2, were taken directly from the rpop website.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients Under Accident Prevention there are short case histories of 10 reported radiotherapy incidents. It is useful to remind ourselves of what can go wrong in radiotherapy and the serious consequences that may ensue.
9
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients More safety information is provided for each radiotherapy modality including discussions of ways to optimize the radiation exposure and ways to prevent accidental exposures.
10
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients There is also a series of slides and lectures in radiotherapy to provide additional information on the properties and safety of radiation sources used in radiotherapy. This material was developed with the purpose of ‘training the trainers’.
11
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients And you can access SAFRON from this website where you will find over 1300 reported events that can be viewed. We discussed SAFRON extensively in Module 5 of this program.
12
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Radiation Protection of Patients As part of a safety program in any radiotherapy centre, it is reasonable that staff be expected to engage in private study/continuing education and one easy and free way to do that is through visiting the rpop website regularly. RPOP website updates latest news and upcoming events in the field of radiation protection field as well.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea OBJECTIVES We will explore two locations on the IAEA website: Radiation Protection of Patients Human Health Campus And now we will turn our attention to the Human Health Campus of the IAEA.
14
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus The Human Health Campus is an on-line resource developed and managed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It contains a wealth of information for radiation medicine professionals both in therapy and imaging and is constantly being updated. In the next few slides we’ll see what sort of information is available on this website.
15
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus Here’s part of the page for radiation oncology. We can see that there’s advice on many relevant topics starting with “Making the case for radiotherapy in your country” through training issues to improving the quality of service.
16
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus Under the medical physics tab, access can be gained to discipline specific information for physicists in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
17
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus Delving deeper into the radiotherapy section under the medical physics tab we find information on dosimetry, quality audits and a variety of other topics relevant to the safe practice of medical radiation physics in radiotherapy. Clicking on any of these icons takes us even deeper into the website. For example if we click on acceptance tests and commissioning of radiotherapy equipment we come to the page shown on the next slide.

MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus We can see from this screen shot just how comprehensive the information available on this website is.
19
Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea Human Health Campus Access to all this information is totally free. This website constitutes another unique resource for building and maintaining a safe, high quality radiotherapy program.

Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy
MODULE 11: useful resources Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy Section 1: on-line resources at the iaea summary We have explored two locations on the IAEA website: Radiation Protection of Patients. Human Health Campus. As a summary of this section we have explored IAEA’s radiation protection of patients website and the Human Health Campus. Both are rich sources of safety and quality information for the radiation Treatment Community.
