1st Aid: Immediate care you give someone with an illness or injury before an advanced professional arrives
1st Aid Kit: Contains supplies that you might need in an emergency
Chain of Survival: Most important actions needed to treat life threatening emergencies
Choking: When food or another object gets stuck in the airway
Epinephrine Pen: Contains medicine that is injected to help someone breath more easily who is having an allergic reaction
Fainting: Short period when a person stops responding for less than a minute and then seems fine
Diabetes: Disease that affects levels of glucose (sugar)
Stroke: Occur when blood stops flowing to the brain
Seizure: Abnormal electrical activity in the brain
Shock: Develops when there is not enough blood flowing the cells
Bandage: Material used to protect or cover an injured body part

Hypothermia: Low (cold) body temperature, can cause death
Poison: Anything a person can swallow, breath, touch that can cause illness or death
CPR: Compressions on chest and giving breaths to save a persons life

10. FIRST AID BASICS
Some people may be required to perform first aid while working. If they are off-duty: They can choose whether or not to provide first aid
Before you provide first aid, it’s important to ASK the ill or injured person if you may help
1. If the person responds, introduce yourself as a first aid provider before you touch them. Ask if you may help
2. If the person Agrees = you may give first aid!
3. If the person Refuses your help, phone your emergency response number and stay with them until someone with more advanced training arrives and takes over
4. If the person is confused or cannot answer, ASSUME they want your help

11. ASSESSING THE SCENE
You may have to give first aid in dangerous places. Make sure the scene is safe
As you approach the scene consider the following:
DANGER: move only if they are in danger or you need to move to provide first aid
HELP: who can help you phone for help
WHO: who is injured, how many are injured
WHERE: where are you. Be able to tell dispatch where you are

12. UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS
Universal precautions are intended to PROTECT you and your coworkers.
Treat everyone’s blood as if it were INFECTED!
Body fluids such as blood, saliva, and urine can sometime carry germs that cause disease. Personal protective equipment (PPE) protects you
Blood borne disease are caused by germs. A rescuer may catch a disease if germs in someone else’s blood or body fluids enter the rescuer’s body
Three examples of bloodborne diseases :
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C

Yell for help while you start to check the ill or injured person
If no one answers your yell and immediate care isn’t needed:
Leave for a moment while you phone your emergency response number (or 911)
Get the first aid kit and AED if available
Return to person
Stay with the ill or injured person and be prepared to give first aid or CPR
Send someone else to phone emergency response number (or 911) and get the first aid kit and AED if available

You will learn private things about your coworkers/injured people. You must not share this information with other coworkers. Keep private things private!
