AND THE CREATIVE ARTIST
JESTER/TRICKSTER AND THE CREATIVE ARTIST
2
CULTURE AND LANGUAGE The Trickster is the Archetype accredited with language and culture. As such, this archetype is of special interest to the film maker, writer or director. Even if the film maker does not create a trickster character, she herself will demonstrate and experience many of the trickster characteristics
3
Jester Archetype The Call Boredom The Motto

Coyote, The Lovable Clown, The Captain Underpants Series Setting Colorful, jovial, not serous, creative, designed to make you happy, playful, clever, responsive, quick evidence of the absurd. 4
The Jester Trickster … The ability to experience and enjoy life fully and to tell the truth with impunity. Gifts include joy, freedom and liberation. Without Trickster, the world would sink to stagnation.
5
A Jester/Trickster character may ask himself these questions:
What in my life needs to be enjoyed? Where is the joy and happiness in my work? Where in my life can I tell it like it is? How can I learn to recognize my shadow? What do I need to enjoy my life more? How do I maintain a balance in my life?
6
The goal of the Jester is enjoyment and pleasure yet the Jester is also the part of us who can tell it like it is, the child in the story who was the only one to notice that the emperor was naked. “The Fool is the aspect of the inner child that knows how to play, to be sensual and in the body. It is at the root of our basic sense of vitality and aliveness which expresses itself as a primitive, childlike, spontaneous, playful creativity.” The Jester allows us to play full out, to give it all we’ve got, right here, right now.
7
Say No to the Status Quo ALTERING PERSPECTIVES is a Jester /Trickster Activity.
8
Trickster – creator/jester/magician
It seems that neither the Jester nor the Magician adequately explain the Trickster. The Trickster seems to be a combination of three archetypes. The Trickster lives in the –in-between
9
Hungry change agent The Trickster is thought to be the archetype responsible for language and culture. The Trickster, always a male in myths and legends, has a huge appetite – driven by a hunger which causes him to trick others. Yet, in tricking them and in satisfying his hunger, the trickster brings about change.
10
Jung’s notions of Trickster
The so-called civilized man has forgotten the trickster. He remembers him only figuratively and metaphorically, when, irritated by his own ineptitude, he speaks of fate playing tricks on him or of things being bewitched. He never suspects that his own hidden and apparently harmless shadow has qualities whose dangerousness exceeds his wildest dreams. As soon as people get together in masses and submerge the individual, the shadow is mobilized and, as history shows, may even be personified and incarnated.
