Injections 101 Injections depend upon: Type of animal involved
Purpose of injection Amount of solution or medication needed
3
Syringes Measured in cc’s or mL
Both cc’s and mL are the same measurement Come in disposable, automatic, and reusable Come in all sizes
4
Needles Two different measurements for needles Gauge: Needle Length:
Measures the diameter of the needle The smaller the gauge, the bigger the diameter of the needle Needle Length: Varies on use and animal
6
Filling a Syringe Use a CLEAN needle and attach to a syringe
Pull air in and out of syringe Know dosage amount from medication/vaccination bottle. Hold bottle upside down Pierce bottle top with needle Push in the amount of air as you want product (5cc of vaccine = 5 cc of air) Draw back on plunger to desired amount Flick syringe to get air bubbles to needle end, and compress plunger to release excess air

Injection Types Intravenous – vein – fast action
Intramuscular – Large muscle (neck, thigh) Sub Cutaneous – under the skin layer Intradermal – into the skin layer Epidural – Into spine Oral – by mouth Intramammary - into mammary gland (mastitis)
10
Intravenous Injections
Into the vein Typically not used in livestock Jugular vein is used in livestock Same technique as drawing blood samples
11
Intramuscular Injections
In the muscle layer Large muscle typically in the neck
12
Subcutaneous Injections
Under the skin Used on neck, shoulder or flank
13
Safety Procedures Use new or clean equipment
Clear work are of contaminants Restrain animal properly Read directions on bottle or box Never push cap on needle, always scoop on Follow withdrawal times
14
Give It Your Best Shot! Table partners will receive a half a banana
Restrain the animal properly, rub and determine injection site Load syringe Give Injections Intravenous ( in banana skin) Intramuscular (directly into banana) Subcutaneous (between banana peel and fruit) Answer follow-up questions Raise hand for instructor to check your work
