1 Oxygen in the blood Developing: Describe how substances are transferred around the body. Secure: Explain how smoking affects the respiratory system. Exceeding: Analyse how exercise affects your breathing rate. Entrance Activity Get out your crossword homelearning and swamp with your partner. Then attempt to complete each others crossword. Tool Box – Key Words Haemoglobin Red blood cell Tar Carbon monoxide Heart disease Emphysema

2 Components of the blood
Teacher Explanation Components of the blood

3 Learning Activity Mix and Match Part of the body’s immune system and is used to fight of pathogens (germs) Red blood cells (RBC) Carries a range of substances, including: Carbon dioxide, hormones, glucose, urea and more. Plasma White blood cells Used to block damaged blood vessels and prevent blood loss. Carries oxygen from the lungs to different tissues in the body. Contains a substance called hemoglobin. Platlets

4 Transfer of oxygen Teacher Explanation In capillaries, oxygen gradually leaves the red blood cells and dissolves into the plasma. This leaks out through the minute holes in the capillaries and forms tissue fluid, which then caries oxygen to the cells. Plasma has glucose ad other nutrients dissolved in it and so these are also in the tissue fluid.

5 Oxygen in the blood Developing: Describe how substances are transferred around the body. Secure: Explain how smoking affects the respiratory system. Exceeding: Analyse how exercise affects your breathing rate. Entrance Activity Get out your crossword homelearning and swamp with your partner. Then attempt to complete each others crossword. 6 Research Project Home learning Effects of smoking Create an information board about the effects of smoking. Include all the information in the success criteria. Learning Activity Exercise and breathing In groups of two or three, carry out the exercise and breathing experiment using the learning sheets shown below. You have twenty minutes to create a prediction and collect results. Extension Activity If you complete all your work, attempt to do the second page on the exercise and breathing learning sheet.

8 Which of these conclusions best describes your results?
Assessment Activity Conclusion Which of these conclusions best describes your results? As the intensity of the exercise increased, the amount of oxygen required also increased. This caused an increase in the student’s breathing rate. As the intensity of the exercise increased, the amount of oxygen required stayed constant and the breathing rate stayed constant too.

9 Oxygen in the blood Developing: Describe how substances are transferred around the body. Secure: Explain how smoking affects the respiratory system. Exceeding: Analyse how exercise affects your breathing rate. Entrance Activity Get out your crossword homelearning and swamp with your partner. Then attempt to complete each others crossword.
