How does outward appearances determine our feelings

The Rhesus Monkey Experiment

Lab Experiment 1 Description: Harlow separated infant Rhesus monkeys from their mothers at birth. Next the infants would be “raised” by two substitute machine mothers capable of feeding the infants milk. One mother was made out of bare wire. The other was made out of soft cloth.

Lab Experiment 1 Write down YOUR hypothesis!

Lab Experiment 1 Procedure: Allow the infant monkeys to interact with either of the substitute mothers

Lab Experiment 1 Observations: 1. monkeys spent far more time clinging to the soft cloth substitute. 2. Even when milk came from only the wire substitute, spent more time with cloth sub.

Lab Experiment 1 Write down YOUR conclusions!

Lab Experiment 1 Theory: infant love was not simply about meeting physiological needs, more than just nursing.

Lab Experiment 2 Description: Monkey infants are separated into two groups with no choice between the two types of substitute mothers.

Lab Experiment 2 Write YOUR hypothesis!

Lab Experiment 2 Procedure: Allow infants to attach to substitute mothers

Lab Experiment 2 Observations All drank same amount of milk
Grew the same size When scared, soft cloth infants hugged substitute mother and calmed down When scared, wire mesh infants dropped to floor, clutched themselves, rocked back and forth, and screamed in terror

Lab Experiment 2 Write YOUR conclusions!

Lab Experiment 2 Theory: members of the first group benefited from emotional attachment. By providing reassurance and security to infants, cuddling maintained normal development

Lab Experiment 3 Description: infants in total isolation for the first eights months of life. Others longer for a period, others shorter period.

Lab Experiment 3 Write YOUR hypothesis!

Lab Experiment 3 Procedure: Do not allow any contact with substitutes or other infants

Lab Experiment 3 Observations: Extreme abnormal behavior in all
Isolated longer than 90 days, permanently damaged.

Lab Experiment 3 Write YOUR conclusions!
