The inventor is a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang. It was invented after Leo saw his wife wrapping a piece of cotton around the end of a toothpick, in order to clean out their children’ ears.

4. The most common use for cotton swabs is to clean the ear canal and/or to remove earwax. However, medical experts recommend that it should not be used for that purpose as it can push earwax deeper into the ear, making it harder to remove.

5. The “Q” in Q tip stands for quality, and tips refers to the cotton ends.
