What connections should I be making?
Sound Labs Review What connections should I be making?

#1 What’s the Splash Purpose: To visualize sound waves
A sound wave is a mechanical wave that is produced by a vibrating object and travels through matter Sound is a Longitudinal Wave Sound waves are able to travel through solids (table), liquids (water) and gases (the air) Sound waves travel best through solids, than liquids and then gases why do we think that is?

# What’s the Splash In water - the wave energy from the tuning fork is transferred from the tines to the water. What did this cause? Waves in the water. The harder the tuning fork was struck the more waves produced

#2 Black Box - Hearing Pathway
Hearing sound is not automatic The sound waves must pass from the object making the sound, through your ears and then to your brain following this order: Pinna (outer ear) - focuses sound waves and determines direction Ear Canal - conducts/moves sound waves to eardrum Eardrum - vibrates when sound waves arrive Bones of the Middle Ear - increase the force of the vibration and move the sound deeper into the ear Cochlea - filled with fluid which produces pressure waves in response to sound Organ of Corti (w/hair cells) - hair cells move in response to pressure waves and cause electrical impulses depending on the amplitude and frequency Auditory Nerve - carries electrical impulses from Organ of Corti to the Brain Brain - Interprets electrical impulses as sounds of varying pitch, loudness and timing

#3 - Sound in Solids & Liquids
Sound travels in waves Sound must travel through a medium to be heard solid, liquid or gas Sound travels by sending vibrations through matter Sound travels fastest through solids and slowest through gas or the air Why do we think that is? Think about “What’s the Matter” Unit and what we learned about the molecules and their The sound heard when the dowel hit through the cup of water should be a louder sound but have a lower pitch and be muffled The sound heard when the ear was placed on the table will be louder than the sound heard when your ear does not touch the table
7
#4 - Dancing Pepper The two different trials were done with tuning forks that had different pitch (different frequency of sound) When you change the pitch you change the amount of vibrations The More vibrations the more energy present and the more energy being transferred. The pepper on the plastic “danced” or moved much more with the higher pitch tuning fork.
