What are STIs? Sexually Transmitted Infections are infections that you can get by having sex with someone who has been infected Not everyone who has an STI feels or shows any symptoms A person can have more than one STI at the same time

Who is at risk for STIs? Anyone who has sex, no matter what kind (vaginal, anal or oral) can be at risk for an STI. Anyone who has had more than one partner, or has ever had sex with someone who has had more than one partner.

Who is at risk for STIs? Anyone who has shared needles for drugs, body piercing, or tattoos. Anyone who has come in direct contact with body fluids of an infected person

Statistics Two-thirds of all STIs occur in people 25 years of age or younger. One in four new STI infections occur in teenagers. Cervical cancer in women is linked to HPV. At least 15 percent of all infertile American women are infertile because of tubal damage caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), the result of an untreated STD.

Chlamydia Many have NO symptoms.
Men can have pain or burning during urination. Women may have pelvic pain, abnormal discharge or bleeding between periods. Curable with antibiotics Without treatment can lead to damage to reproductive organs, sterility, & harm to baby in pregnant mother.

Gonorrhea May experience abnormal discharge, burning with urination or pelvic pain. Curable with antibiotics Without treatment can lead to damage to reproductive organs, sterility, & harm to baby in pregnant mother

Syphilis 3 Stages Curable with antibiotics
Painless sore, red or brown in color Rash, swollen joints or fever like illness possible 6 weeks to 6 months after sore appeared Possible brain damage, insanity, paralysis, heart disease, blindness or death Curable with antibiotics

Herpes Virus remains in the body for life, and can produce symptoms that come and go. Transmitted from skin to skin contact with sores Symptoms include: blisters burning feelings if urine flows over sores inability to urinate if severe swelling of sores blocks the urethra open sores pain in the infected area There is no cure

Genital Warts (HPV) HPV- Human Papilloma Virus
Bumps/warts on genitals or in genital area. Some people have no symptoms Transmitted through sex with infected partner, usually direct contact with wart. No cure. Without treatment there is an increased risk of cervical cancer

What should you do if you think you have a STI?
STIs don’t go away by themselves, they need to be treated Have an evaluation done by a medical professional Receive treatment if necessary Inform your partner(s) so he/she can do the same
