IDEA: We aim to use mobile technology to create efficient family-centered services for young children with disabilities in SA. USER Name: Tshela Age: 32 Profession: Domestic worker Other: She is a single mother of two children. The youngest child, Inam, is 12 months has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and is sitting or crawling independently. What is happening: Tshela received an text message with a reminder of her appointment at the Cerebral Palsy clinic and a link to a questionnaire. Tshela is able to complete the questionnaire and screening survey for her child on her phone. The questions are simple and in her home language, isiXhosa. This will save her time and direct her appointment at the clinic tomorrow. Tshela’s biggest concern is finding someone to look after Inam properly while she is at work.

REVIEW OF PARENT SELF ASSESSMENT What is happening: Doctor Johnson has access to Inam’s questionnaire and screening survey that was filled in by her mother. The response are translated into English for Dr Johnson. The doctor has noted some red flags in the social environment and will ensure the Tshela sees the Therapist and Social Worker during this visit. Doctor Johnson thanks Tshela for completing the questionnaires as it makes his job easier. The doctor knows what to expect when Tshela comes in the door and will do a brief medical exam to ensure that Inam is healthy physically.

What is happening: The therapist Basheera, has reviewed the developmental screening survey filled in by Inam’s mother and has set a goal with the mother to improve Inam’s sitting balance so she can be a bit more independent. This will also help the person taking care of her while Tshela is at work. While Basheera is treating Inam, Tshela is sent to the Social Worker to get a list day care centres in her area that could look after Inam. Tshela is given some simple exercises to do at home with Inam to improve her independence in sitting and crawling.

What is happening: Tshela is happy and satisfied with her visit to the clinic. She feels all her needs were met and she has additional information and support to take care of her child. Tshela will receive another text message to remind her of her text visit and to complete the questionnaire and surveys again. This encourages Tshela to return to the clinic and be active in her child’s holistic development.

PARENTS SPREAD THE WORD What is happening: Rachel is at the Developmental clinic for the first time. She is a mother of a 6 month old baby, Miracle, who was born with hydrocephalus. She is told by another mother in the queue to complete the health questionnaire and screening survey for her child. She has the option to do it on her phone or on the tablet at the front desk but someone is already using this device. She is happy she is able to anticipate some other the questions the doctor might have as this reduces her anxiety. Her biggest challenge at the moment is explaining to her family what is wrong with Miracle.
