3 Can you guess the words I am sounding out?
Phonics or sounds What is Phonics? Skill of breaking down words into their smallest unit of sounds. Segmenting these sounds and blending them together to make a word. c-a-t cat s, g, ch, r, m, v, oi Can you guess the words I am sounding out?

4 How do we teach phonics? Letters and Sounds programme- used to inform planning and the order in which we teach the sounds and tricky words. 8 Reading booksc This is a typical book you will see.
Before we even open the book, we will talk about the front cover. At home, ask questions about the picture. Talk about the title, authors etc. Show your child the words and how we read from left to right. Talk about turning the pages and when we turn the page. Lilac books Book levels

9 Pink book – the first book with words……
Pink book – the first book with words…….the words are ones that your child can sound out. You can start to build words – b u g. As the year goes on, we will be teaching words that do not sound out (eg the) TRICKY WORDS. These will be attached to the front of the sound book. Children need to learn these words by sight. Also we will be sticking in HF words to learn by sight rather than sounding ot to speed up reading and begin to gain fluency.

10 Reading at home….. Read 4 times a week Practise sounds in Phonics book
Practise tricky and high frequency words-Blue words are “Tricky” and green are “HFW” Write in the diary And later Practise word packs Starting from next week we will be teaching your child the skills they need to learn to read. And sending home books. Obviously we want it to be an enjoyable, exciting experience for both you and your child. This is an overview of what we do. Lots of books. Lots of talking, getting children interested and excited about books.

Mrs Stubbs and Mrs McNamee are going to write some phrases on the board for you all to guess! Different stages of writing.

17 A book that we will send home with number skills to practise. E.g…..
Purple number books A book that we will send home with number skills to practise. E.g….. Counting objects Number recognition More and less Calculating Book – accumulate. – we will stick in activity ideas, so that you can practise at home. Home and school ability can be very different. Counting is just a song. Rehearsal.

18 Book bag Enjoy practising at home from Monday with the following:
2 reading books 1 book box book Green Jolly phonics book Purple maths book Reading Diary And later… Word pack Alix Books in book bag can be changed up to 3 times a week. But always once a week. Please bring your child’s book bag every day.

19 Requests Helpers to change books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning each week. Helpers to change word packs on Tuesday and Thursday morning each week. Helpers in the classroom. Let us know if you have any skills you would like to share with us. Alix
