Ice Cream in a Baggie

What We Are Doing We are going to add milk, sugar, and vanilla to a bag. Then, we are going to make it REALLY cold by adding ice and salt around the bag.

Hypothesis Answer the following in your hypothesis:
Why would we add the salt to the ice? What would happen to the ingredients inside the bag?

Materials 1 quart bag 1 gallon bag ¼ cup of sugar
¼ teaspoon of vanilla flavoring ½ cup of milk Salt Ice Cubes

Procedure Get ¼ cup of sugar, ½ cup of milk, and ¼ teaspoon vanilla from your Science Alliance leader Pour everything into a 1-quart plastic bag and shake the bag to mix everything up Add 2 cups of ice to the 1 gallon bag Add ½ cup of salt to the 1 gallon bag Put the 1 quart bag into the gallon bag BE CAREFUL! The bag is very cold. Hold by the top part of the bag and gently rock the bag from side to side. Do this until the things inside the quart bag are solid Get cups and spoons from your Science Alliance leader to eat the ice cream you just made!

Conclusion Was your hypothesis correct?
What happened when we added the salt to the ice? What happened to the ingredients inside the bag? Why? Was the ice cream good?
