MBMG Seamless Enterprise Geodatabase
Jeremy Crowley Assistant Research Hydrogeologist 11/14/2016
2
Background 2012 Download individual 100k maps as .E00 files Started working group of about 10 people to work on GIS Geology 2013 Built Legacy NCGMP09 Geodatabase 2014 Started edge-matching NCGMP09 Seamless Geodatabase Started correcting topology Started completing continental glacial deposits Started standardizing units Started building Description of Map Unit (DMU) table 2015 Release nearly complete ArcGIS Service 2016 Release nearly complete DMU table Need to finish descriptions

Details ArcGIS Server 10.4 SQL Server 2012
number of 1:100k MBMG maps: 79, number of USGS 1:100k maps: 5 Link to current ArcGIS Service: /services in the geology_100k folder/geology_100k_seamless

Scales of Enterprise Geodatabases
Number of Maps Total Number of MapUnits 1:24,000 ? 1:100,000 84 845 1:250,000 6 1:500,000 1 305 1:1,000,000 123 Archived stand alone NCGMP09 databases (100k) at publication. Then database merged into seamless (100k) Plan to start work on 250k and 24k after 100k is complete

What Rock Am I On? What is the description? What type of rock?
What maps is it present on? Where is the limestone? What is the total surficial exposure of a specific rock? Where are the landslides?
9
Philosophical Issues All Scales or Individual?
Individual enterprise geodatabase at each map scale Archiving? Stored maps at time of publishing in separate NCGMP09 geodatabase Added to legacy geodatabase Added to seamless enterprise geodatabase Generalized or Detailed Descriptions? Generalized is fast, Detailed not. Working on tables of map descriptions from original maps Multi-agency? Yes, cite USGS maps. Internal vs. Public? Public with published and relatively polished maps Dissemination? ArcGIS Service with DMU table joined to MapUnitPolys ArcMap Package, ArcGIS Online? KMZ, georeferenced PDF’s

Tips and Tricks Check out tools already created for NCGMP09
Take a look at British Columbia’s GIS Geology drockMapping/Pages/BCGeoMap.aspx Have senior geologist work on map unit standardization and edge-matching. Learn Python (Data Dictionaries, Search Cursors, Speedy Geoprocessing Tools, Repeatability) GIS Tools (Frequency Table, Spatial Join, Dissolve, etc.) Look into Cartographic Representations
