HOW DO I PREPARE FOR INTERVIEWS?
RESEARCHING THE ORGANISATION/UNIVERSITY AND THE ROLE WILL SHOW YOU TO BE MOTIVATED AND INTERESTED …Find out the following… What the placement is likely to involve? Research job role and career area. How best you can fit your skills and experience to match the placement? Think of some examples in advance that prove the necessary qualities of the placement. The 6 Cs E.G. NHS Core principles/values: - that it meet the needs of everyone - that it be free at the point of delivery - that it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay

WHAT SKILLS AND QUALITIES WILL THEY BE LOOKING FOR?
strong communication and listening skills a genuine desire to help people a non-judgemental attitude to care a clear understanding of confidentiality good teamwork skills and the ability to work on your own initiative physical and mental stamina a mature, compassionate and sensitive manner good practical skills patience and empathy the ability to inspire confidence and trust the ability to remain calm under pressure good organisational and time management skills a flexible approach to work

ANTICIPATE THE QUESTIONS, PREPARE YOUR ANSWERS
Why do you want to become a ………? Can you tell me what skills that you have that would make you a good ……..? What personal qualities do you have that would make you suitable for being a health care professional? How do you manage your time effectively? What is your greatest achievement? What relevant experience do you have?

DURING THE INTERVIEW

TRY TO… Be friendly and positive Answer with examples
Show positive interest (body language) Listen to what you are being asked! Speak clearly and enthusiastically Think of questions to ask at the end Dress smartly and ensure you are well groomed

TRY NOT TO… Sit down until invited Interrupt the interviewer
Guess the question- If you haven’t heard, or don’t understand, just ask for it to be repeated or rephrased (politely) Slouch Panic – if you go blank ask for some time or take a sip of water whilst you think Answer vaguely – give examples Swear or use offensive language

Group activity…why? Ability to work in a team
Social skills and social confidence Ability to work under stress and pressure Ability to take initiative and influence others Communication skills: manners, nature, generosity, aggression, dominance, listening skills, independent mindedness and more. The degree of compatibility between your social skills and the skills required.
